How it works
仕組みA quick-fire quiz over roughly sixty JLPT N5 and N4 kanji: the elements, animals, verbs, and time words every beginner meets first. Each round deals ten random questions that alternate between two skills: counting strokes (how many strokes does 水 have?) and recalling meanings, each with four choices and instant right-or-wrong feedback showing the kanji’s reading, meaning, and stroke count. A review list at the end shows exactly what you missed, and your best score of the session stays on the board until you close the page.
Stroke count is how paper dictionaries index kanji, and it forces you to see a character’s real structure instead of its rough shape. Learners who can count strokes reliably also tend to write more balanced, correctly-ordered kanji by hand.
About sixty characters drawn from the JLPT N5 and N4 lists: nature basics like 山, 川, and 雨, everyday verbs like 読む, 買う, and 帰る, and time words like 週 and 曜. The deck skews toward the first few hundred kanji any textbook introduces.
Occasionally, yes. A few characters differ by one stroke between Japanese and Chinese counting traditions, and handwriting styles can merge strokes. This quiz uses the standard Japanese school counts (kyōiku kanji conventions), which is what the JLPT and Japanese dictionaries expect.
