How it works

The upper limit of hearing drops naturally with age: most people in their 20s reach 17-18 kHz, while by the 50s the ceiling is often 12-14 kHz. No chatbot or chart can tell you yours. It depends on your ears, your headphones, and your volume, so the only way to know is to run the tones through your own equipment. Everything is generated locally with the Web Audio API; nothing is uploaded.
It may genuinely be your ears, but check your hardware first: many laptop speakers and cheap earbuds roll off sharply above 14-16 kHz, and Bluetooth codecs can shave the top end too. Retry with decent wired headphones before drawing conclusions. If a friend a decade younger hears the same tone on the same headphones, the limit is probably yours.
It’s a fun screening of your upper frequency limit, not a calibrated audiogram; real audiometry uses controlled loudness levels in a soundproof booth. Your playback volume, DAC, and room noise all shift the result. If you notice sudden changes or trouble following conversation, see an audiologist rather than relying on any browser test.
Start in the comfortable middle (1-4 kHz, where hearing is most sensitive) to set a safe volume, then work upward until tones disappear. Keep the volume constant across all frequencies; cranking it up for the high tones defeats the comparison and can hurt your ears. The lowest tones may feel quieter on small speakers because they physically can’t reproduce 125 Hz well.
